Rationalism is the key to knowledge that has only been in the minds of a great minority. It is crucial to rely on reason, and not on the alleged credibility of other humans, not only because the claims of historical and contemporary thinkers are not true simply because of the identity of the claimers, but also because historical thinkers tend to overlook the details of reality. Sometimes, the truths that are commonly overlooked are the most important. Ever since the creation of my blog, I wanted to detail as many of these truths as possible--but, considering how precise and controversial many of them are, I did not want to immediately write about each one. This list serves as a compilation of many, but certainly not all, of the neglected truths that I have written about (and there are still more to come). Because this partial list is not small, I have embedded affiliated links in an alternate way.
Metaphysics
- The laws of logic exist by absolute necessity even in the absence of all other things, including God (this is even further than mathematical platonism goes on its own), meaning that it is impossible for there to be "absolutely nothing" (if God does not exist, there can be no creation, but there is still something that exists: logic) and that the mere necessary existence of logic refutes solipsism
- There is an uncaused cause (God), but it could cease to exist at any time, since even the uncaused cause does not exist by intrinsic necessity like the laws of logic do
- God's existence does not necessitate the existence of morality or meaning (though the existence of values does necessitate the existence of God)
- Physical sensations mean that any consciousness that experiences them must have a body
- Time is immaterial, meaning it is not a part of the universe
- Space was not created by God because it is exists by necessity even in his absence
- The existence of space refutes naturalism, because space is immaterial
- Logic, space, and even basic consciousness are supernatural things, since they are not comprised of matter
Epistemology
- Far more than just logical axioms and one's own consciousness can be known with absolute certainty; something can always be known about everything, even if it is nothing more than that everything is what it is, involves no contradictions, and that there are truths about everything
- Since a dream occurs only within the mind, and physical sensations cannot be experienced without the existence of a physical body, the sense of touch distinguishes waking experiences from dreams by demonstrating that one's consciousness is not merely gazing within itself
- The very existence of a subconscious component of the human mind is incapable of having any support, since the word refers to something that cannot be consciously perceived
- The fact that a being is not constantly confused by practically everything about its experiences means that its memory is reliable to the extent that it provides information about sensory perceptions that is consistent with what one perceives
Ethics/Biblical Ethics
- Conscience is completely incapable of providing moral knowledge, as it can only inform someone of their own moral perceptions and preferences, and not of morality itself
- Sociopathy can be a helpful condition, since having it means that one is unconcerned with the arbitrary whims of conscience and that one can focus on morality itself instead of subjective feelings about morality
- It is worse to inflict unjust abuses upon an evil person than it is to inflict lesser evils upon an innocent person
- The thieves crucified alongside Jesus did not deserve to be crucified because crucifixion is an inherently unjust penalty
- Recreational use of drugs without intoxication is not Biblically sinful
- Extramarital flirtation is not Biblically sinful
- Bribery is not sinful outside of contexts of justice
- The Biblical version of Lex Talionis is literal, but does not apply outside of an extremely limited set of scenarios
Sexuality
- Sexual feelings for another person, even when channeled into masturbation to explicit sexual thoughts of an actual person or even to explicit sexual videos/images/literature, are not themselves objectifying; sexual energy is not an uncontrollable, animalistic, or objectifying force
- Erotic literature, videos, and images are objectively nonsinful by Biblical standards as long as they do not glorify sexual immorality
- Lingerie is not sexual in itself
- Men and women who feel sexual attraction for each other can still be close friends
- A person can use books or the internet to appreciate images of the nude human body (or the human body with scant covering) in a strictly nonsexual way
Miscellaneous
- The Quran not only does not condemn exposure of the human body and displays of nonsinful sexual acts, but condemns those who oppose what the Quran does not condemn (Surah 16:116-117)
- The Bible does not teach classical Trinitarianism
