The Chinese Coronavirus

The COVID-19 crisis, as I touched upon elsewhere [1], has given numerous non-rationalists the chance to feel like current events have demonstrated the veracity of their fallacious worldviews.  Stupidity is a disease that plagues both conservatives and liberals, and their collective responses to COVID-19 have done nothing to correct this.  The non-rationalistic frameworks of both parties have been put on even more overt display over the past few weeks!

One of the fallacious liberal reactions to the events surrounding the virus is the opposition of the phrase "Chinese Coronavirus."  According to the opponents of this phrase, which is only meant to specify the origin of the COVID-19 outbreak, calling COVID-19 the Chinese Coronavirus is racist--or, at the very least, invites racism.  A rational analysis of racism reveals that neither charge is correct in any way.

Racism is nothing more than any form of discrimination against someone because of their ethnicity beyond recognizing and acknowledging the color of their skin.  Any negative or positive assumption about a person's intelligence, moral character, personality traits, and talents because of his or her skin color are asinine.  This is racism, and nothing else.

Naming a virus after the country in which it originated is not the same as considering any of that country's residents inferior because they live there.  Some people may respond to the name in a racist manner by discriminating against Chinese people, but to call COVID-19 the Chinese Coronavirus is not racist by any means, nor does the phrase have the power to make anyone become racist.  It is just a reference to the country where the COVID-19 outbreak started.

In fact, it is racist to object to white people using the phrase "Chinese Coronavirus" when the objection is rooted in the fact that the one using the phrase is white.  Genuine racism is trivialized by hypocrisy and confusion over the nature of race-based discrimination.  Whoever morally objects to the alternate name for COVID-19 on grounds of racism either does not understand what racism is or does not care about being logically correct, if not both.

Logic, people.  It is very fucking helpful.
